In
1958, while in the fourth grade in Cleveland, Ohio,
I was crushed when I failed to win first prize in my
school's magazine subscription drive. I really wanted
that bike! But, second prize was a camera, my first
camera. That was the beginning of my passion for photography;
I've had a camera in my hands ever since!
The
camera has been my passport, my VIP pass into countless
wonderful venues and experiences; it has opened doors
to places I would never have thought I'd see.
Photography
lets me take week long glimpses into other people's
professional lives and experiences which is endlessly
fascinating. And every now and then I get to do something
like photograph from a helicopter in the Grand Canyon,
or a swamp boat doing 50MPH in the Everglades, or stand
in front of the pyramids in Giza . . . or experience
a pristine sunrise at Bryce Canyon, all in the name
of photography.
It
took a while to get over it, but I'm glad I didn't win
that bike in the fourth grade!
